  • Who can administer Dermal Fillers?
In the UK, dermal fillers are classified as medical devices by medical authorities, which means that these treatments can be used by practitioners without the need for a prescription. It is recommended by manufacturers that only practitioners who are medically qualified should administer treatments using collagen, hyaluronic acid, or other types of dermal fillers. As a result, you’ll find a variety of healthcare professionals, including nurses, general practitioners, cosmetic doctors, dermatologists, plastic surgeons, ophthalmologists (eye specialists), and private dentists, offering one or more options for dermal filler treatments. Manufacturers advise against the use of these treatments by beauticians or anyone else who is not a part of the medical profession. Given the wide variety of fillers available in the market to address different issues, it’s crucial to ensure that your practitioner has received the appropriate certified training for both the specific filler they’re using and the area they’re treating.
  • What treatments can I have with Dermal Fillers?
At Fox Medical Aesthetics, we offer a range of treatments using dermal fillers to enhance your natural beauty. This includes lip augmentation, cheek and under-eye enhancement, and jawline contouring. Whether you are looking to restore volume to aging skin or add definition to specific areas of your face, we will work with you to achieve your desired results. We use only high-quality, award winning products and prioritise safety, with beautiful natural-looking results. We take the time to understand your unique needs and provide an individual treatment plan tailored to you. If you have any specific concerns or questions about dermal filler treatments, please do not hesitate to schedule a consultation with Kerry at Fox Medical Aesthetics.
  • What is the cost of Dermal Filler Treatment?
The cost of dermal fillers can differ significantly, dependant on the type of filler used and the extent of the treatment planned. Typically, the prices for dermal fillers are determined by the area and projected number of syringes necessary to achieve the desired outcome. Moreover, fillers that are primarily used for facial sculpting, contouring, and volume addition tend to be pricier than those used solely for treating individual lines. In some cases additional treatments with other agents like botulinum toxin (Botox®) might be suggested, particularly for lines in the upper part of the face. The cost is also affected by the quality of the filler clinics and practitioners purchase, and where they are purchased from. As a result, the overall prices at different clinics can range from £150 to over £750 per treatment. It’s important to remember that using low quality or less filler to add volume or enhance the contour of the face will generally yield a less satisfying and less durable effect than opting for a comprehensive (and potentially more expensive) treatment.
  • What Dermal Fillers should I use?
At Fox Medical Aesthetics we use Revanesse®. This is a line of injectable dermal fillers that are made of cross-linked hyaluronic acid. These fillers are designed to smooth, plump, and contour the face. Manufactured by Prollenium in Canada, Revanesse fillers are known for their refined and high-quality nature. They have a high viscosity (thickness) that makes them versatile and long-lasting. Hyaluronic Acid (HA), a sugar naturally produced by your body, is a key component of Revanesse®. As a water-binding molecule, it has the ability to hold 1000 times its weight in water. A large amount of the naturally occurring HA is found within the body and present within the skin. The Revanesse® line of dermal fillers can help to rejuvenate, smooth, lift, contour, firm, and enhance your features. They provide Natural-looking results with minimal pain and swelling . Remember, any procedure should be performed by a qualified professional. If you have more questions or need further clarification, feel free to get in touch.
  • How long will it take to recover from Dermal Fillers?
The recovery time from Dermal Fillers can vary depending on individual factors such as the type of filler used and the area treated. Typically, most patients experience minimal downtime and can resume their normal activities immediately after the procedure. However, some mild swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection site may occur, which usually subsides within a few days. To ensure a smooth recovery, it is important to follow post-treatment care instructions provided following your treatment. If you have any concerns about recovery or the healing process, we are available to address any questions or provide additional support and information.
  • Does menopause affect skin colour?
Yes, menopause can affect skin color due to hormonal changes that occur during this phase of life. As oestrogen levels drop, the skin may become drier and lose its natural look, causing uneven skin tone, leading to a duller complexion, an increase in pigmentation or irregularities such as age spots or melasma. At Fox Medical Aesthetics, we offer a range of treatments and skincare options specifically tailored to address these changes, including, facial peels, and medical-grade skincare products. We can provide personalised recommendations to help restore your skin's natural radiance and address any concerns related to skin tone and texture during menopause. • Can menopause cause sun sensitivity?
Yes, menopause can indeed cause sun sensitivity due to fluctuating hormone levels, particularly a decrease in oestrogen. This hormonal shift can lead to the skin becoming more sensitive to UV radiation, resulting in increased risk of sunburn, skin discoloration, and other sun-related damage. At Fox Medical Aesthetics, we understand the unique skin concerns that come with menopause and offer tailored treatments to address sun sensitivity, such as customised skincare regimens, laser treatments, and phototherapy. We can provide personalised recommendations to help manage and minimise the effects of sun sensitivity during menopause, ensuring that you can continue to enjoy healthy, radiant skin.
  • Does your face shape change with menopause?
Yes, the face shape can indeed change with menopause due to the natural aging process and hormonal shifts. As we age, the skin may lose elasticity, leading to sagging and drooping in certain areas of the face. Additionally, the decrease in oestrogen levels during menopause can contribute to a swift reduction in collagen production, as well as a decrease in bone density, resulting in a loss of facial features, overall volume and firmness. At Fox Medical Aesthetics, we offer a variety of non-surgical and minimally invasive treatments to address these changes, such as dermal fillers to restore lost volume, skin tightening procedures to improve sagging, and other personalised medical aesthetic treatment plans to help you achieve a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance perimenopause, during and after menopause. We are dedicated to providing personalised care and tailored treatment plans to help you look and feel your best at every stage of life.
  • How does menopause affect the skin?
Menopause can have a significant impact on the skin due to hormonal changes. As oestrogen levels decrease, the skin may become drier, thinner, and more prone to wrinkles and sagging. Collagen and elastin production can also decline rapidly, leading to loss of skin elasticity and firmness. Additionally, menopausal women may experience an increase in facial hair, pigmentation changes, and a decrease in skin's ability to retain moisture. At Fox Medical Aesthetics, we understand the unique challenges menopausal skin faces and offer personalised treatment plans to address these concerns, including volume replacement , skin rejuvenation treatments, and custom skincare regimens tailored to individual needs. Our goal is to help you restore volume and maintain healthy, glowing skin during and after menopause.
  • What moisturiser is good for menopausal skin?
At Fox Medical Aesthetics, we understand the unique skincare needs that come with menopausal skin. To address these needs, we recommend using a moisturiser that contains ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and peptides. Hyaluronic acid helps to hydrate and plump the skin, while ceramides help to restore the skin's natural barrier, which can become compromised during menopause. Peptides also aid in firming and smoothing the skin. Additionally, look for moisturisers with antioxidants like vitamin C and E to protect against environmental damage. As a skincare specialist we can provide personalised recommendations based on your skin type and specific concerns. Contact us to schedule a consultation and we can recommend skincare products tailored specifically to your skincare needs through the menopause.
  • How does menopause affect bone density?
As women go through menopause, their oestrogen levels decrease, which can lead to a decrease in bone density. At Fox Medical Aesthetics, we offer a range of services to help support bone density during menopause, we can discuss the use of medical aesthetic treatments, such as non-surgical procedures to improve volume, facial appearance and skin health, which can have a positive impact on overall wellbeing during menopause. Contact us today to discuss a personalised treatment plan to rejuvenate your facial features and help with overall wellness during menopause.
  • What is the best skin care for menopausal skin?
At Fox Medical Aesthetics, we understand the unique challenges that menopausal skin can present, including dryness, thinning, and loss of elasticity. To address these concerns, we recommend incorporating a skincare routine that focuses on hydrating and nourishing the skin. Look for products that contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid, which helps to retain moisture, retinoids or peptides to stimulate collagen production, and antioxidants like vitamin C to protect against environmental damage. Additionally, incorporating a gentle exfoliant and cleanser into your routine can help to slough off dead skin cells and encourage cellular turnover , followed by a moisturising and SPF to help protect and maintain the health of menopausal skin. We also offer specialised treatments, such as Profhilo and microneedling, to further address skin concerns related to menopause. We are dedicated to providing personalised skincare recommendations and treatments to support the unique needs of menopausal skin.
  • What happens during a Botulinum Toxin treatment?
The Consultation When you visit the clinic for the first time, you’ll have a detailed discussion with a qualified practitioner. During this conversation, your expectations regarding the cosmetic effect of the treatment will be realistically and clearly highlighted. The practitioner will share their perspective on how the treatment will work for you. It’s essential that your expectations align with theirs. If there’s any discrepancy, take the time to ensure you’re entirely satisfied with the information provided before proceeding. Next, the practitioner may take your medical history to ensure that you’re suitable for treatment with botulinum toxin. You’ll be asked to sign a consent form, acknowledging that you understand the potential effects and side effects of the treatment. It’s important to note that the drug is not currently licensed for this specific use in the U.K. During this initial visit, photographs will be taken of you smiling, frowning, and with your face at rest. These images serve as “before and after” comparisons, allowing you to see the success of your treatment. The consultation and consent process or separate and begin the treatment will be undertaken at the next appointment. The Injections The area to be injected will be thoroughly cleaned with an antiseptic. No anaesthetic or sedation is necessary for this procedure. Using sterile disposable syringes, tiny amounts of botulinum toxin will be injected into several points in the agreed area. These injections are precise and targeted. Review Appointment A follow up appointment will take place 2 weeks later to review the results with the patient. This helps the practitioner assess how you have responded to the injections and to optimise your final results. Repeat Procedures Depending on factors like the treated area, dosage, and individual response, repeat treatments will be needed approximately every 3 to 4 months. These follow-up sessions help maintain and potentially enhance the initial effect observed. Remember that individual experiences vary, and it’s essential to follow your practitioner’s guidance throughout the process
  • Will Botox work for me?
Botox® has revolutionized wrinkle treatment, backed by extensive clinical trials and patient experiences. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) consistently ranks botulinum toxin treatments as the most popular aesthetic procedure in the U.S.A. In 2019 alone, a staggering 1,712,994 Americans opted for Botulinum Toxin (Botox®, Dysport®, or Xeomin®), representing 55% of all non-surgical cosmetic treatments. While detailed statistics for the United Kingdom are not yet available, it’s likely that Botox® holds a similar top position here. Regulatory authorities worldwide have licensed Botox® for treating glabellar lines and wrinkles. In the UK, Vistabel® (Botox® with specific dosing for glabellar lines) received approval from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in March 2006. Dysport® (Azzalure®) and Xeomin® (Bocouture®) also hold licenses for similar indications. Beyond aesthetics, botulinum toxin has diverse clinical applications, including spasticity, tension headaches, migraines, and more. If you’re considering treatment, consult a practitioner for personalized guidance. We hope this overview informs your understanding of Botox® treatments. However please remember that individual results may vary, so you must seek professional advice tailored to your needs.
  • Who can perform Botulinum Toxin injections?
Due to the widespread popularity of botulinum toxin treatment, you can find it offered in various settings by a diverse range of practitioners. These include: Dentists Plastic surgeons General surgeons Dermatologists (skin specialists) General practitioners Gynaecologists Ophthalmologists (eye specialists) Cosmetic doctors Nurses (acting under a prescriber’s instruction) Restrictions for Non-Medical Professionals: Beauticians and Beauty Therapists: Non-medical professionals such as beauticians and beauty therapists are not allowed to administer botulinum toxin. This is because it is classified as a Prescription Only Medicine (POM). Informed Decision-Making: When seeking treatment, always inquire about the practitioner’s training and experience. This is especially crucial if you intend to have the treatment in the lower part of your face or neck. Remember that choosing a qualified and experienced practitioner contributes to a safe and effective treatment outcome.
  • What is the average cost of Botulinum Toxin injections?
Most clinics and practitioners will charge based on an area of the face or apply a fixed price for a full treatment to achieve the best results. Common treatment areas include: Crow’s Feet Forehead Lines Glabellar Lines (frown lines between the eyes) Practitioners typically charge £175 to £300 per treatment area. If you require treatment in multiple areas, the combined cost is likely to be discounted. Beware of Low Prices: Be cautious of extremely low quoted prices. Some practitioners use doses of botulinum toxin (such as Botox® or Vistabel®) that are lower than recommended. While the initial effect may appear good, the treatment may not last as long. Consequently, you might need more injections than the suggested norm throughout the year. Opting for a cheaper treatment initially could end up costing you more overall if additional visits are necessary. If the price looks to good to be true, then it usually is. It is recommended that if the Clinic is not registered with a government approved Professional body you consider researching and finding another clinic. Remember to discuss pricing, treatment areas, and any concerns with your practitioner to make an informed decision.
  • What are the risks of Botulinum Toxin injections?
Patient Experience and Side Effects of Botox® Injections: Most patients find Botox® injections to be relatively painless. Some liken the sensation to a minor insect bite. The procedure is swift, and the needles used are tiny, delivering only small amounts of liquid into the skin. While many patients tolerate the injections well, some prefer to have a topical anaesthetic cream applied about half an hour before treatment. This helps numb the skin and enhances comfort during the procedure. Please remember in a regulated clinic where the practitioner is experienced and qualified some of the following side effects are far less likely to occur. Temporary Side Effects may include mild bleeding or slight swelling at the injection site. These effects are usually minimal and transient and in some cases, bruising may occur, especially around the eyes. However, makeup can effectively conceal this, and the bruising resolves over time. In more rare cases patients may experience a headache after treatment and in very rare cases double vision may occur. The following complications are far more likely to occur with an unregulated clinic and unqualified practitioner: Partial Ptosis (Drooping Eyelid): When botulinum toxin is injected into the forehead area, it is possible to weaken the muscle that holds up the eyelid. This can cause partial ptosis (drooping of the upper eyelid). it typically resolves within 2 to 10 weeks. Some doctors use an eye drop called apraclonidine to speed up recovery if this effect occurs. Eyebrow Position Changes: Excessive relaxation of the forehead muscles (especially in patients with looser skin) may lead to slight drooping of the eyebrows. This effect is temporary and usually disappears within 10 weeks. Alternatively, the eyebrow may elevate, when this is not desired. Adjusting the position with additional botulinum toxin injections can correct this. Remember that the effects of botulinum toxin are not permanent, and any unwanted side effects typically resolve within approximately 3 months. Always consult with your practitioner and follow their guidance throughout the process.
  • What can I expect after Botulinum Toxin treatment?
Post-Treatment Advice for Botulinum Toxin Injections: Normal Activities: Following botulinum toxin injections, you can resume your normal life without any major restrictions. However, as with any medical procedure, it’s essential to closely follow your practitioner’s advice to maximize the treatment’s benefits and avoid complications. Immediate Aftercare: Muscle Activation: For a few hours after injections, actively contract and use the muscles in the treated area. Practice frowning and smiling. Some evidence suggests that this may enhance treatment effectiveness by speeding up the absorption of botulinum toxin. Avoid Rubbing or Vigorous Exercise: During the initial hours after injections, refrain from rubbing or massaging the treated area. Avoid vigorous exercise as well. This precaution reduces the risk of botulinum toxin spreading to adjacent muscles, potentially causing eyelid drooping. Patience for Full Effect: Waiting Period: Be patient and allow up to two weeks for the treatment to work fully. Even after this period, most people can still move the treated muscles to some extent. This is normal. The goal of treatment is not to prevent muscle movement entirely but to reduce the frequency of muscle contractions that lead to wrinkles. Follow-Up with Practitioner: After 14 Days: A review appointment will be made after the first treatment to monitor the results. This is standard medical practice and nothing to be concerned about. Immediate Contact for Concerns: Eyelid Drooping or Brow Position Changes: If you experience eyelid drooping, adverse eyebrow position, bruising, or infection following treatment, contact your practitioner promptly. Remember that individual experiences may vary, and open communication with your practitioner is crucial for optimal results.
  • Who should not be treated with Botox or Botulinum Toxin?
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Botulinum toxin should not be used in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Although manufacturers have not conducted clinical studies in this group (for obvious reasons), it is generally believed that the treatment is not dangerous to developing babies. If you are currently trying to conceive, it’s advisable to delay any cosmetic treatment until after pregnancy. Muscle Activity Disorders: Patients with diseases that affect muscle activity may not be suitable candidates for botulinum toxin injections. It’s crucial to discuss your medical history with your practitioner. Your practitioner may inquire about a history of Bell’s palsy, as this can impact the dosage they use. Bleeding Disorders and Medications: If you have bleeding disorders or are taking drugs that affect bleeding time (such as certain aminoglycoside antibiotics), your practitioner may advise against treatment. Be prepared to inform your practitioner about any medications you are currently taking and any allergies you have. Remember that open communication with your practitioner is essential for safe and effective treatment.
  • How long will Botulinum Toxin treatment last?
The effects of botulinum toxin treatment typically last for approximately 3 to 4 months. Here’s what you can expect: Onset of Effect: The toxin usually takes effect within 3 to 4 days of the injection, but, dependent on the individual, it may take up to 2 weeks for the full benefits to start to take effect. Full Effect: It usually takes about 2 to 3 weeks to see the full effect of the treatment. Duration: The effects generally last for 3 to 4 months following the initial treatment. Maintenance: If you decide to have repeat treatments, it’s advisable to wait at least 3 months between sessions to maintain the desired results. Remember that individual responses may vary, and it’s essential to follow your practitioner’s advice and aftercare instructions. For more information, you can refer to the NHS guidelines on botulinum toxin injections.
  • How does Botulinum Toxin work?
Our facial expressions constantly shift due to muscle contractions and relaxation. When we want to frown or laugh, our brain sends signals via nerve endings to specific muscles in the face. Enter botulinum toxin—a game-changer in aesthetics. Here’s how it works: Blocking Nerve Signals: When injected into a targeted muscle, botulinum toxin disrupts the nerve’s ability to communicate with that muscle. Essentially, it puts a temporary pause on muscle movement. This effect typically lasts around 3 to 4 months. Smooth and Wrinkle-Reduced: After botulinum toxin injections, the treated area appears smoother and less wrinkled. But fear not—the rest of your face remains unaffected. You can still express yourself naturally—laugh, smile, and frown—just with fewer skin creases in the treated zones. Gradual Improvement: Over time, patients often notice that lines and wrinkles in treated areas become less pronounced. The toxin allows new skin to grow without constant creasing, resulting in a smoother surface. Versatile Wrinkle Treatment: Botulinum toxin effectively addresses wrinkles caused by normal facial movement. However, it’s not suitable for permanent wrinkles from excessive sun exposure. Maintenance and Safety: To maintain and enhance results, treatments every 3 to 4 months are recommended. Rest assured, botulinum toxin injections are proven safe over extended periods.
  • What is Botox or Botulinum Toxin?
Botulinum toxin, commonly known as Botox, is a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. The bacterium Clostridium botulinum produces various proteins, classified as type A to type F. These distinct proteins have varying effects on muscle relaxation. In the United Kingdom, two types of commercially available botulinum toxin are widely used: Type A Toxin: This includes well-known brands such as Botox®, Vistabel®, Dysport®, Azzalure®, Xeomin®, and Bocouture®. Type A toxin targets specific muscle groups, resulting in relaxation and aesthetic benefits. Type B Toxin: Neurobloc®. Although less common than type A, type B toxin also plays a role in medical treatments. Both types offer unique applications, making them valuable tools in the field of aesthetics and medicine.
  • What is the recovery time for Botulinum Toxin injections?
The appointment will be for between 45-60 minutes with the injections taking approximately 15 minutes. Following this you should be able to go about your daily business. The Practitioner will provide advice and guidance on any specific activities to avoid for the 24 hrs immediately following the injections.
  • What areas can Botulinum Toxin be used to treat?
Botox can have excellent treatment outcomes in the upper half of the face. Commonly, botulinum toxin targets forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet around the eyes and frown lines between the eyebrows. Other more advanced treatment options include the following: Under-Eye Refinement: Botulinum toxin can subtly reduce fine lines beneath the eyes, provided the skin isn’t excessively loose. Patients often enjoy a slightly wider, more open-eyed appearance post-treatment. Brow Elevation: A “chemical brow lift” is achievable by repositioning or lifting the eyebrows a few millimeters. Additionally, it minimizes “bunny lines” (those atop the nose when smiling). For more serious cases, botulinum toxin aids those with facial trauma or Bell’s palsy, correcting asymmetry. Lip and Mouth Lines: Experienced injectors address fine vertical lines around the lips and mouth. Sometimes, combining botulinum toxin with dermal fillers fills deeper wrinkles. Chin Softening: Dimply chins caused by underlying muscle tension can be softened. Likewise, horizontal “necklace lines” can be treated by botulinum toxin. Platysmal Bands: These neck muscles, often prominent and stringy, also benefit from botulinum toxin, resulting in a smoother appearance.
  • How does Profhilo® work?
Ultra-pure hyaluronic acid is precisely injected into the area being treated. Unlike wrinkle reducing and dermal filler treatments, Profhilo® stimulates collagen and elastin, attracting water in the deeper layers of the skin. As a stabilised product, the activity on dermal cells will last longer than that of a non-stabilised gel. During this time the stimulation of four different types of collagen and elastin takes place by slow release of hyaluronic acid. The stimulation results in significant tissue improvement. Therefore we cannot say that Profhilo® is a skin booster as it also has a significant tightening / lifting effect on the tissue.
  • Is Profhilo® treatment worth the money?
Profhilo® treatment stands out for its enduring effects, fewer sessions and less recurrent costs, relative to other cosmetic treatments make it a cost effective treatment option. The lasting nature of Profhilo®, along with its accumulative advantages, make it an excellent choice for continuous skin enhancement and revitalization.
  • Which is better Profhilo® or Botox® ?
When weighing the options of Profhilo® versus Botox® , it’s important to take into account aspects such as your age, the current state of your skin, specific areas you wish to address, and the outcomes you’re aiming for. Profhilo® is advantageous for enhancing the overall quality of the skin, while Botox® is particularly effective for addressing distinct dynamic wrinkles.
